  As coordinator of this interdisciplinary project, Eawag is responsible for the overall project output and aims at maintaining an open research atmosphere. The research activities are on advanced oxidation, sensor technology for control of nutrient removal plants, waste design and sludge treatment.

  As a leader of workpackage 3 and due to the long experience in environmental analytics, BfG is responsible for analytical quality, analysis capacity allocation as well as specific biological degradation studies. According the previous experience with coordination of EU-projects (POSEIDON) BfG will be an important member of the NEPTUNE Steering Committee (NSC). Further a group of BfG is responsible for the microbiological assessment of effluents and the efficiency of post-treatment processes within workpackage 3.

  UNIFRA will contribute to workpackages 3 (Contaminants and toxicity assessment) and 4 (Assessment, evaluation). Within WP 3, a Whole Effluent Testing (WET) will be performed, accompanied by a Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) with screening assays (in cooperation with BfG). For the different tests used in the effluent testing, assessment criteria will be developed. Furthermore, two emerging contaminants will be characterised ecotoxicologi­cally and a specification sheet for a mobile WET unit will be developed. For WP 4 UNIFRA will contribute to the incorporation of micro-pollutants and ecotoxicological effects in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). According their experience with coordination of EU-projects UniFra will be an important member of the NEPTUNE Steering Committee (NSC).

  DTU will be leader of workpackage 4 and mainly responsible for the LCA method development and application, including assessment of environmental sustainability and best practice wastewater and sludge treatment.
